He’s insufferable.

Gritting my teeth, I remain in my seat as everyone else abandons the conference room. Before Chad has the chance to leave, though, I jump to my feet and head straight toward the door. Closing it, I turn on my heels and lock my eyes on his. He’s not going to leave here before I give him a piece of my mind.

“What’s this?” He asks me, cocking one eyebrow up. “Are you going to beat the contract out of me or something? I don’t mean to ruin your plans, but I don’t think you’d win in a fist fight against me.”

“Hilarious,” I tell him, my tone deadpan. “Could you stop cracking stupid jokes? This entire thing is spiraling out of control, in case you haven’t noticed.”

“Are you trying to say that it’s my fault?” He shoots back, an annoying smirk on his face. God, I just want to put my hands around his neck and strangle him.

“It sure as hell isn’t my fault,” I sigh, shaking my head as I say it. “But I’m not just going to stand here and let the whole thing go to shit, Chad. I’m going to start shifting my resources.”

He glares at me, his whole body tensing up, but he doesn’t say a thing.

Not at first, anyway.

“Fine,” he shrugs. “Do whatever you want, I don’t care. I’ll still get Central.”

“Yeah? Then what? You can’t build without me.”

Looking straight into my eyes, he takes one step toward me. I hold my breath as I realize just how tall he is, and I have to use all of my willpower not to let my eyes wander down his body. He might be an arrogant asshole, but he’s also one of the most handsome men I’ve ever seen.

“I don’t need you,” he whispers, and this time I can’t help but let my eyes be drawn to his lips. God, why does he have to be so freaking irresistible? “I didn’t need you before, and I sure as hell don’t need you now.”

“Sounds like you’re trying to convince yourself.” Forcing myself to look into his eyes, I offer him a teasing smile. He’s trying to play it cool, but he knows that he needs me. And in more ways than one.

Stop it, Leslie, I admonish myself, but it’s already too late to apply the brakes. My thoughts are already going off the rails, my heart beating hard inside my chest, and a pleasant warmth has started taking over my body.

“You’re the one who needs me.”

He takes one more step toward me, our bodies only inches apart. I hold my breath, the pounding of my heart against my eardrums making it impossible to hear my own thoughts, and then it happens.

Placing one hand on the wall behind me, Chad leans in. I close my eyes, reacting on pure instinct, and my lips part of their own accord. Next thing I know, his mouth is on mine, my tongue prying his lips open.

“What were you saying?” I tease him the moment he pulls back from me.
